The project will add up to 2000 MW to the existing 300 MW of transmission capacity between northern and southern Afghanistan. The new line will transmit electricity produced domestically by hydropower and fossil fuel generation in the country's northern region, as well as accommodate power imports from neighboring Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to supply Afghanistan's domestic needs. The Project is ranked as the top priority in Afghanistan Power Sector Masterplan (2012-32) as well as in the National Energy Supply Program (NESP) of the Government of Afghanistan.
The 220 kV Double Circuit, double conductor Transmission Line project from Arghandi to Butkhak is a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen Afghanistan's power transmission and distribution network. The project is set for completion within 24 months from the issuance of the Notice to Proceed NTP (Sep 2, 2024) by the Ministry of Energy and Water. Upon completion, the project will increase Afghanistan’s National Power System capacity by an additional 300 MW, benefiting approximately 150,000 to 180,000 families, as well as supporting industrial and commercial growth. Strengthening the national energy infrastructure will promote sustainable growth, economic development, and industrial expansion in the region. This landmark project highlights Afghanistan's commitment to modernizing its infrastructure and attracting private sector investments.
The 220 kV Double Circuit, Single Conductor Transmission Line project from Chemtala to Tarakhail is a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to strengthen Afghanistan's power transmission and distribution network. The project is owned by the Ministry of Energy and Water and is financed through private investment from Awfi Bahram Trading and Mining Processing Company, highlighting the significant role of the private sector in advancing Afghanistan’s energy infrastructure. The scope includes the comprehensive design, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning of a state-of-the-art substation that will significantly improve energy distribution and enhance operational reliability. In economic terms, revenues that the CASA-1000 system is expected to generate annually will help procure more electricity for the people of Afghanistan. Separate community support program to be funded from the revenues of the CASA-1000 system will help improve community access to essential services by implementing local projects in health services, electricity supply, construction of schools and bridges. Afghanistan imports majority of its power, but even with these imports, the country cannot meet the existing energy demand. To help meet this demand, Afghanistan signed agreements with Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan as sellers of power through the CASA-1000 system. According to the power purchase agreements, Afghanistan will purchase 300MW electricity from the two countries. This additional supply of electricity will help alleviate acute power shortages in the country and may reduce the existing gap between demand and generation.
